Pennsylvania Hospital is now accepting applications for our Summer 2025 Nurse Extern Program
The Nurse Externship is an 8-week summer employment opportunity for nursing students enrolled in an accredited BSN program who have completed at least one clinical rotation on a medical/surgical inpatient unit and are entering their final year of nursing school. This program is designed to enhance and solidify your nursing knowledge, critical thinking, time management, and skills under the direct supervision of a registered nurse preceptor. As a nurse extern you will follow your assigned preceptor’s work schedule, including some weekends, and will assist in clinical nursing care. The nurse extern position is primarily day shift, with some rotations to mid-shift. Additionally, nurse extern must attend scheduled didactic educational seminars throughout the program.
5 Cathcart
5 Cathcart is a 46 bed medical surgical nursing unit providing superior care to adult acute care patients. Our clinicians use Modified Primary Care Nursing as our care delivery model to provide the highest quality of care. Our physicians, nurses, and patient care techs, are experts in caring for patients with a variety of diagnoses including but not limited to Sickle Cell Anemia, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, Congestive Heart Failure and Chronic Renal Failure. We are also well versed in working with the Transfusion-Free Medicine Team to provide care to their patients. In addition, we are experts in providing symptomatic management for oncology patients. Our niche is providing care to patients with multi co-morbid conditions. We use a holistic multidisciplinary approach, functioning within the Relationship Based Care Professional Practice Model. This professional practice model allows us to care for our patients the same way we would want to be cared for-where the patient is a valued integral part of the healthcare team.
Qualifications/Requirements
- Applicants must have a 3.0 GPA or better in their BSN program
- Must have completed the Nursing Foundations/ Fundamentals Clinical Course
- Must be a rising senior (summer between junior and senior years)
- Must have current BLS certification through the American Heart Association
- Must be available for day and mid shift and working weekends
- Must attend all scheduled seminar
- Must be available June 1 through July 26, 2025, for full-time (36-40) hour weeks
- NO holidays are required
